180° South: Conquerors of the Useless

Our Eco Film on Friday, September 6th will be 180° South: Conquerors of the Useless.

Documentary, 2010 – 85 minutes. Dir – Chris Malloy. USA, English

180° South: Conquerors of the Useless is a nature-adventure documentary that covers the journey of Jeff Johnson as he travels from Ventura, California to Patagonia, Chile, retracing the famous 1968 trip of environmentalists Yvon Chouinard and Doug Tompkins in their Ford E-Series Econoline Van.

In the course of following Johnson’s journey, the film raises the question of finding a balance between conservation on one hand and the mass-produced technological innovations that made both the film and the journey possible on the other hand, and suggests that there’s more adventure in preservation of nature than in its conquering.
