emotA documentary for viewers of all ages about the thinking, emotional and feeling side of animals that are all too often viewed as food. Jeffrey Masson leads viewers through the personal journey he underwent while writing The Pig Who Sang to the Moon. It brings Masson to animal sanctuaries around the country where caregivers and the animals themselves tell their harrowing stories of rescue and escape. Masson delves into the rich ancestry of these curious and intelligent animals and interviews top experts in animal behavior who offer scientific perspectives on these amazing creatures.
The film focuses on the complex lives that animals lead and their feelings. It shows us that animals don’t have to rely on intelligence to prove their similarity to us. They have complex emotional relationships with other members of the farm. However, we place strong emphasis on the intelligence of animals. Pigs are capable of solving mathematical problems. Although our compassion for them shouldn’t depend on such feats.
We are capable of recognising the complexity of our own lives and those of dogs and cats. When it comes to farm animals, we block out the possibility. It would be painful indeed for us to acknowledge that these animals have rich, emotional lives, too.
