Genre: Documentary. Writer: Jamaica Kincaid. Director: Stephanie Black. USA, 2001. 80 minutes.
Based on the fascinating novel “A Small Place” by Jamaica Kincaid, and backed by a native Reggae soundtrack, Life and Debt explores the effects of globalization on Jamaica’s agricultural industry and factory workers. The film studies the disparity between the tourists perception of the island and the reality of poverty, crime, and hopelessness. It follows individual Jamaicans whose lives are shaped by larger economic agendas and demonstrates the strength of the people who defy the odds of survival.
