Seva is the foundation of community life at Sadhana Forest. Seva is a Sanskrit word that means selfless service. It is the act of offering your time, energy, or skills without expecting anything in return. The idea is to serve others, or the greater good, with love and humility. Seva is often seen as a powerful way to grow spiritually, reduce ego, and be connected. It is considered a form of karma yoga: the yoga of action.
The main reason for coming to Sadhana Forest as a residential volunteer is to do Seva. This work includes reforestation, water conservation, caring for animals in the Gaushala, and maintaining the community. Every task, whether planting a tree, cooking a meal, or cleaning a compost toilet, is part of the same practice of service. Each morning and afternoon, volunteers gather in teams to carry out these sevas together, creating both forests and community through shared effort.
