Sadhana Forest is a natural learning community. Natural learning is an extension of compassion, treating children with the same dignity and respect that we give to all beings.
Natural learning is the practice of learning without coercion, punishment, or external rewards. It is built on trust in children’s curiosity and ability to guide their own growth when given respect and freedom. Play is the natural way children learn about the world, and consent is central to all interactions. Adults do not impose authority but offer support when invited, creating an atmosphere of equality and care.
This principle shapes the way we interact with all children in the community. It also comes alive in Children’s Land, a 2.7-acre space where local children from surrounding villages join us each week for several hours. The children choose how to spend their time and develop the space themselves, while our volunteers provide materials and support when asked. Over time, the program has adapted to reflect the changing needs and interests of the children, as well as the community’s capacity to support them. We also maintain a children-only play area in the main hut, giving children a dedicated space within the heart of the community.
Natural learning at Sadhana Forest means creating environments that are safe, stimulating, and enriching. Just as we create the conditions for forests to naturally regenerate, we create the conditions for children’s natural growth and learning to flourish.
