I know it’s taken me forever, but finally, after about 5 weeks of living in Korea (one of the most ridiculously cell-phone and internet-dependent societies known to man) with neither a cell-phone nor an internet connection, my Alien Registration Card has been issued and I am now allowed to be able to contact people again. I’m really excited about – though also quite scared of – trying to get some eco-friendly things happening around here. I don’t really know where to start, who to look for, or what to to. But, I do have something promising to report:
I went out with a few coworkers the other night to enjoy some Makkoli (a traditional, almost milky rice alcohol) and amazing near-vegan side dishes (some anchovies and leftover bones may be used when pickling vegetables and making dipping sauces): chive pancakes, potato pancakes, mung-bean pancakes, and, of course, kimchi pancakes, kimchi, and tofu. Our good-natured reverly inspired a pair of Koreans to join us. It must have been destiny, for though they looked like ordinary University students, maybe studying management or engineering, they were, in fact, FORESTRY MAJORS. I didn’t even know such options existed here. One has graduated and is working for the Korea Forset Conservation Association; the other is a senior getting ready to graduate. We will plant trees together in the near future. Joy of joys!
